A total of 351 prisoners, including nearly 300 political detainees, were transferred from Sittwe Prison in Rakhine State to Pathein Prison in Ayeyarwady Region, according to a statement released by the Political Prisoners Network – Myanmar (PPNM) on October 12.
The prisoners, mostly political detainees, arrived in Pathein on the evening of October 10. Many of them are reportedly struggling with inadequate food and basic living conditions due to the sudden transfer, as they were not given time to collect their belongings or allowed to bring essential supplies.
Among the 351 prisoners transferred, close to 300 were detained on accusations of links with the Arakan Army (AA). The sudden relocation took place under tight security, with no prior notice given to families or the detainees. According to PPNM, the detainees are facing significant hardships, as the transfer left them without basic necessities.
On the night of October 8, a total of 366 political prisoners were unexpectedly moved from Sittwe Prison. While some have been sent to Pathein Prison, it is unclear where the remaining prisoners have been transferred. Reports suggest that some may have been sent to Insein Prison, although confirmation has yet to be received.
The transferred prisoners include over 200 villagers from Byaing Phyu and two staff members of DMG, a Rakhine-based news agency, one of whom is a journalist. Due to difficulties in sending care packages to these detainees, PPNM is coordinating efforts to assist families in delivering supplies, and has called for public support.
