A total of 34 bodies of Rohingya refugees have been recovered from the Naf River after a boat capsized as they attempted to flee to Bangladesh, a local official from Bangladesh reported on August 8.
Intense fighting between the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army (AA) in Rakhine State has forced over a thousand Rohingya to try and cross the Naf River to reach Bangladesh. On Tuesday, a boat carrying the refugees capsized, resulting in the deaths of 10 people, including women and children.
The bodies were later found near Shahpari Island in Bangladesh, along with those of the other victims from the capsized boat.
On August 5, as fighting intensified in Maungdaw, a large group of Rohingya refugees attempting to cross the Naf River into Bangladesh was targeted with artillery fire. Reports indicate that around 200 people were killed in the attack, with many women and children among the victims, according to U Aung Kyaw Moe, the Deputy Minister for Human Rights of the National Unity Government (NUG), who spoke to New Day Myanmar.
