UWSA Warns Wa Nationals in Laos to Return for Mandatory Military Service

August 31, 2024

The United Wa State Army (UWSA), South Command, issued a notice yesterday, urging Wa nationals living abroad, particularly those working in Laos, to return to their homeland as soon as possible for mandatory military service. The notice, dated August 31, 2024, gives a deadline of September 7, 2024, for these individuals to register with the relevant security departments. Failure to comply by the specified date will result in arrest and legal action.

The UWSA’s South Command (171st Military Region) has announced plans to recruit 4,000 soldiers each from both the southern and northern regions of Wa State for military service. Wa State has long enforced a law requiring each household to provide one member for military service, with the service period set at nine years for men and five years for women.

The southern Wa State region includes towns such as Mong Kwan, Nayang, Wan Hsun, Mong Yawn, Hwe Aw, Mong Kyat, and Keng Lap, along with numerous smaller villages.
