US Embassy Commemorates Second Anniversary of the Unjust Executions of Ko Phyo Zeya Thaw, Ko Jimmy, Ko Hla Myo Aung, and Ko Aung Thura Zaw

July 23, 2024

To mark the second anniversary of the unjust executions of Ko Phyo Zeya Thaw, Ko Jimmy, Ko Hla Myo Aung, and Ko Aung Thura Zaw, the US Embassy in Yangon held a memorial event this morning.

On July 23, 2022, the military junta executed these four prominent activists in Insein Prison without prior notification, in a blatant violation of legal norms. The embassy’s commemoration serves as a solemn reminder of their sacrifice and the ongoing struggle for justice in Myanmar.

Since the military coup on February 1, 2021, Myanmar has seen a significant escalation in violence and conflict, leading to the loss of many lives. The embassy has erected nearly 5,400 commemorative stones to honor those who have lost their lives due to the brutal actions of the junta.

In a statement released on the embassy’s social media page, it was noted that the conflict in Myanmar has resulted in numerous deaths and untold suffering, with a renewed call for justice and accountability for the victims of the regime’s oppressive actions.
