The Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) has released 50 individuals who were previously detained for drug use in its controlled territories after completing a detoxification program. The announcement was made by TNLA on June 11.
Following the military coup, there has been a significant increase in drug trafficking and usage in northern Shan State, prompting TNLA to intensify its anti-drug measures. The released individuals, who hail from Namkham, Muse, Kutkai, and Namtu townships, underwent a six-month rehabilitation program in TNLA-controlled areas, which included detoxification and moral reformation training.
TNLA’s statement warned that those who relapse into drug use will face re-arrest and may be required to stay in the rehabilitation center for up to three years. The TNLA controls territories in northern Shan State, including Namkham, Muse, Kutkai, and Namtu, following Operation 1027 conducted by northern ethnic armed groups. The TNLA is committed to addressing drug trafficking and use within these areas.
The TNLA’s efforts reflect a broader attempt to manage and mitigate the effects of increased drug activity in the region since the military takeover, aiming to restore social order and health among the affected populations.
