The Special Advisory Council for Myanmar (SAC-M) released a new report on May 30, 2024, stating that Myanmar’s resistance forces have grown stronger in 2024, while the military junta continues to face significant losses. The report, which closely monitors the situation in Myanmar, emphasizes that the junta cannot be recognized as the legitimate government.
The report underscores that the international community must increase its support for Myanmar’s resistance groups. Over the past three years, resistance forces have gained control over various territories, highlighting the junta’s inability to maintain effective governance.
The SAC-M report notes that the junta is falsely perceived by the international community as being in control and capable of organizing free elections. Yanghee Lee, one of the founders of SAC-M, stresses that this misconception must be corrected and that direct support should be provided to resistance authorities to deliver urgent aid and assistance to the Myanmar people.
Between October 2023 and April 2024, the junta lost control over numerous border townships and 55 cities and towns to resistance forces. The junta has escalated its attacks on civilians, resulting in 18.6 million people needing humanitarian assistance and many being displaced from their homes.
Chris Sidoti of SAC-M stated that the junta has shown no willingness to meet the people’s demands, continuing its campaign of violence and repression. The international community must cease arms sales to the junta, impose economic sanctions, and hold the junta accountable for human rights violations.
SAC-M has called on organizations like the UN and ASEAN to take immediate action against the junta’s activities. The report also emphasizes the need for long-term support for rebuilding Myanmar post-revolution, including forming a legitimate government and providing essential services.
The Special Advisory Council for Myanmar (SAC-M), led by Yanghee Lee, Chris Sidoti, and Marzuki Darusman, was established after the 2021 military coup to continuously monitor and document Myanmar’s democratic movement on an international platform.
