As tensions rise in Pyin Oo Lwin, locals are preparing for potential clashes by filling up their vehicles and motorcycles with fuel, ready to flee at a moment’s notice. The heightened demand has led to the emergence of a black market where fuel is being sold for over 10,000 Kyats per liter.
“At the official stations, fuel is sold for around 3,000 Kyats per liter, but it’s in limited supply, so people are waiting in long lines. On the black market, it’s being resold for as much as 10,000 Kyats per liter,” a resident of Pyin Oo Lwin told New Day Myanmar.
With resistance forces reportedly moving into the area, clashes could break out at any time. Since August 7, security in Pyin Oo Lwin has been tightened, and vehicles from Naungcho have been barred from entering the town.
