The Political Prisoners Network of Myanmar (PPNM) reported on July 6 that inmates at Insein Prison are frequently subjected to extortion by prison authorities.
According to the PPNM’s statement, prison officials such as Warden Phyo Zaw Hein, Deputy Officer Aung Kyaw Htay (also known as Par Pok), and Chief Supervisor Kula Pyar (convicted of murder) are demanding money from the prisoners. Inmates are being asked to pay at least 60,000 Kyats per cell under the pretext of expenses for cleaning supplies and storehouse renovations.
Those who refuse to pay face increased harassment and pressure, making their prison life more difficult. The report also mentioned that authorities use various excuses to demand money, including organizing fake events and celebrations within the prison, exploiting inmates and their families.
This extortion has caused significant distress among the prisoners, further complicating their already harsh conditions.
