Reports of a riot breaking out in Kyaikmaraw Prison following an inmate’s fall have been confirmed as false by the Political Prisoners Network of Myanmar (PPNM).
On June 12, at around 5 PM, prison authorities at Kyaikmaraw Prison in Mon State were instructing inmates to install corrugated iron sheets between the men’s and women’s sections to prevent communication between them. During this process, one inmate was electrocuted and fell from a height of over 20 feet. The inmate was rushed to Mawlamyine General Hospital and is currently in critical condition.
The inmate, who was helping with the installation of the sheets on orders from the prison authorities, accidentally came into contact with an electrical wire, leading to the fall. Reports of a subsequent riot within the prison were circulating widely, but PPNM has clarified that there was no such disturbance. Instead, inmates were shouting for help to ensure the injured inmate received immediate medical attention.
Concerns have been raised about the safety protocols within Myanmar’s prisons. Inmates often perform hazardous tasks without proper safety equipment and without compensation. The incident at Kyaikmaraw Prison highlights the dangers inmates face due to the lack of safety measures.
Furthermore, Kyaikmaraw Prison is notorious for the harsh treatment of inmates, including political prisoners. Recently, some political prisoners have faced additional charges and punishments, such as being placed in solitary confinement, for possessing prohibited items.
PPNM’s statement emphasizes that while there was no riot, the incident has brought to light the ongoing issues within the prison system, including the need for better safety protocols and humane treatment of inmates.
Additionally, reports suggest that the prison authorities have installed signal jammers to prevent drone surveillance, which has inadvertently affected the inmates’ ability to rest due to the constant interference.
