The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) announced on July 1 that there are now over three million internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Myanmar. According to UNOCHA, conflicts, landmines, artillery, and aerial attacks have forced many residents to flee their homes.
Currently, these IDPs are facing harsh conditions, especially during the monsoon season. They are enduring significant hardships due to inclement weather, UNOCHA reported.
In June, a World Food Programme (WFP) food storage facility in Maungdaw Township, Rakhine State, was set on fire and destroyed. This incident has raised concerns about the safety and protection of humanitarian aid workers and the supplies they provide.
Since late May 2024, the WFP has faced difficulties accessing Maungdaw, hindering their efforts to provide aid to the displaced populations. The UNOCHA statement highlighted the increasing challenges in delivering humanitarian assistance to those in need.
UNOCHA has called for immediate action to protect aid workers and ensure the safe delivery of humanitarian aid to affected areas.
