Within the past week, 821 Myanmar nationals were arrested in Thailand during inspections carried out by Thai authorities in 14 districts. These inspections targeted homes and workplaces, according to sources working on Myanmar labor issues in Thailand and the Thai Immigration Department.
Activists supporting Myanmar nationals in Thailand reported that the mass arrests took place between the last week of May and the first two days of June. Over 100 of those arrested were detained in Mae Sot.
Labor rights activists have urged Myanmar nationals to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay vigilant even while at home. The arrests are part of Thailand’s national security policy to combat human trafficking and control illegal labor, with such crackdowns occurring twice a year.
The mass arrests were conducted in areas including Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Mae Sot, among others.
The AAC agency, which supports Myanmar workers, has also warned Myanmar nationals to be cautious in Bangkok, Maha Chai, Mae Sot, and other border towns where Thai authorities have intensified inspections and arrests.
Between February and May 2024, Thai security forces also apprehended 3,900 Myanmar nationals who had illegally crossed the border into Thailand.
