More than 6.5 million people have been displaced due to ongoing conflict since the Myanmar military seized power on February 1, 2021, according to a report by the Institute for Strategy and Policy – Myanmar (ISP-Myanmar). The report highlights that the protracted conflict has created one of the largest displacement crises in the region.
The ISP-Myanmar report, released on October 3, 2024, stated that more than 17,000 armed clashes have occurred across the country since the coup, affecting over 70% of Myanmar’s townships. It revealed that ongoing fighting between the military and resistance groups, including ethnic armed organizations and local People’s Defense Forces (PDF), has resulted in the military losing control over 74 townships.
The report noted that the military has conducted 1,027 military operations in response, yet continues to face significant losses. The scale and intensity of the conflict have made it increasingly difficult to ensure civilian safety and maintain regional security, according to the study.
