During the second phase of Operation 1027, which took place from June 25, 2024, to September 7, 2024, airstrikes by the junta resulted in the deaths of 201 civilians and left 228 injured, according to a statement from the Ta’ang Political Consultative Council (TPCC).
The attacks destroyed a total of 172 structures, including homes, markets, and schools, the TPCC reported. The strikes were deliberately aimed at targeting civilians living in areas lost by the junta, the council added.
In just two days, on September 5 and 6, nearly 30 civilians, including children, were killed in junta airstrikes in Namkham and Phaikhun in Shan State and in Mying Township in Magway Region.
On September 8, further airstrikes targeted northern Shan State’s Lashio as well as Nwatoegyi and Myingyan townships in Mandalay Region.
The intense airstrikes follow significant military pressure from allied ethnic armed groups during Phase Two of Operation 1027. In response, the junta has ramped up its air attacks in an effort to regain control.
The interim administration of Karenni State (IEC) released a statement on September 6, urging the International Criminal Court to take immediate action against the junta, accusing it of committing war crimes, including genocide through airstrikes on civilians.
