The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) reported on July 4 that more than 1,000 people have been killed in attacks by the Myanmar military junta during the first half of 2024.
According to data collected by the AAPP, from January 1 to June 30, 2024, a total of 1,076 civilians were killed across Myanmar due to the junta’s assaults. This figure includes 348 women and 728 men. Among the deceased were 15 individuals from the religious sector and 30 from the education sector.
The region with the highest number of fatalities was Sagaing Division, with 313 deaths, followed by Rakhine State, where 259 people were killed.
The report also highlighted the causes of death, noting that 318 people were killed by artillery shelling, making it the leading cause of fatalities. Additionally, 308 people were killed in airstrikes, marking it as the second leading cause of death during this period.
The ongoing conflict and violence have continued to take a severe toll on civilians, with the junta’s military operations resulting in widespread loss of life and human rights abuses. The AAPP continues to monitor and document these atrocities, calling for accountability and justice for the victims.
