U Aung Myo Min, the Minister for Human Rights of the National Unity Government (NUG), participated in the discussion titled “Challenges and Prospects of Justice, Democracy and Peace in Myanmar” held in the Philippines on July 23. During the event, he spoke on the topic “Landscape Human Rights in Myanmar and Challenges in Asia.”
In his address, U Aung Myo Min highlighted the severe deterioration of human rights in Myanmar since the military coup in 2021. He presented detailed accounts of the increasing violence against civilians, the devastating impact of airstrikes on civilian populations, and the resulting displacement of thousands of people from their homes.
The Minister emphasized that the NUG is actively engaging with the international community to present the junta’s actions as violations of human rights and international laws, labeling them as international war crimes. He pointed out that the junta’s continuous violations require a robust response from global and regional bodies.
U Aung Myo Min urged ASEAN to adopt a more effective approach towards the Myanmar crisis, noting that the junta has failed to adhere to ASEAN’s Five-Point Consensus. He advocated for stronger measures and solutions beyond the consensus to address the ongoing crisis effectively. He also called on ASEAN to deny recognition to representatives of the military junta and emphasized the importance of Myanmar’s stability to the regional socio-economic and security landscape.
Furthermore, the Minister encouraged the Philippines, as the incoming chair of ASEAN, to take decisive action on Myanmar. He suggested strengthening the Trioka mechanism within ASEAN and promoting the use of universal jurisdiction to hold the junta accountable for its crimes.
The discussion saw engagement from various Filipino organizations, which U Aung Myo Min urged to support international legal actions against the junta’s transgressions and to advocate for stronger regional responses to the crisis in Myanmar.
This participation underscores the NUG’s ongoing efforts to garner international support and pressure the military junta to end its oppressive rule and restore democracy in Myanmar.
