The National Unity Government (NUG) has strongly condemned the killing of Baddanta Muninanda Bhivamsa, the revered Sayadaw of Win Ninnmi Monastery in Bago, who was fatally shot by military troops on June 19, 2024. The incident occurred on the Nganzun-Myothar road when the vehicle carrying Sayadaw was attacked by the military junta, resulting in his tragic death.
According to an official statement from the NUG released on June 20, the NUG and its Ministry of Defense express profound sorrow and outrage over the loss of the esteemed Sayadaw, based on the testimony of a companion who was traveling with the Sayadaw at the time of the incident.
The NUG has labeled the military’s actions as a blatant and heinous war crime, condemning the junta not only for committing such a brutal act but also for refusing to acknowledge the truth, deceiving the nation and its people, and falsely blaming innocent parties. The NUG’s Ministry of Defense stated that these actions reflect the junta’s lack of moral integrity and are deeply reprehensible.
In their statement, the NUG highlighted the junta’s pattern of dishonesty and manipulation, which further compounds the injustice of their actions. The NUG calls for international attention to these ongoing atrocities and urges for stronger measures to hold the military accountable for their crimes against humanity.
