Northern Alliance Urges China to Intervene Against Junta’s Targeting of Civilians

August 7, 2024

The Northern Alliance, composed of three allied groups, has called on China on August 6 to intervene and prevent the military junta from targeting civilians with aerial bombings. These bombings occur without any active combat in the areas being targeted, amounting to war crimes, according to the alliance.

The alliance claims that the junta has been conducting indiscriminate aerial bombings on civilian-populated areas such as towns, markets, schools, and hospitals, leading to significant civilian casualties. They urged the international community to intervene and stop these attacks.

The Northern Alliance stated that the junta’s actions, which target civilians without any active combat, clearly constitute war crimes. They specifically mentioned areas under their control, including Laukkai, Theinni, Kutkai, Namhsan, and Mrauk-U, where civilian infrastructure has been deliberately bombed.

The statement also highlighted that the junta, facing defeat in battles with the Northern Alliance, has resorted to targeting civilians in towns and villages, describing these actions as blatant war crimes.

The Northern Alliance condemned the junta’s strategy of bombing civilian infrastructure and called on the international community to take action to protect civilians. They emphasized that the deliberate attacks on non-combatant populations are unacceptable and urged immediate intervention.
