Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, the Deputy Chairman of the National League for Democracy (NLD), is currently receiving medical treatment at Mandalay General Hospital due to cancer. He was transferred from Obo Prison Hospital on June 25 after his condition failed to improve with the treatments provided in prison.
Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, who has been imprisoned since the military coup on February 1, 2021, is suffering from cancer and was previously receiving chemotherapy in the prison hospital. However, the lack of progress in his condition necessitated a change in treatment, leading to his transfer to the general hospital for more advanced care, including additional spinal fluid extractions.
At 73 years old, Dr. Zaw Myint Maung’s health has been a significant concern. During the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in August 2021, he also contracted the virus and received treatment at Mandalay General Hospital.
Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, who served as the Chief Minister of Mandalay Region and holds a senior position within the NLD, has been sentenced to 29 years in prison by the junta on various charges. Since his detention, he has not been allowed any contact with his family.
The junta has denied him access to private medical care and continues to restrict his treatment to public hospitals, even though the prescribed treatments have not been effective. The decision to transfer him to Mandalay General Hospital is seen as an attempt to provide more comprehensive care for his deteriorating health condition.
