On July 20, a shooting incident by the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) on the Lashio-Tangyan road resulted in the death of a driver, according to reports.
The deceased, identified as Ko Wae Yan Htun, was driving a Mandalay-Lashio route vehicle when he was shot by an MNDAA soldier at a checkpoint near Tangyan. The shooting occurred as the vehicle attempted to pass through the checkpoint without stopping, despite no visible barricades blocking the road.
On July 10, the MNDAA Military Committee had issued directives for soldiers operating near Lashio, emphasizing the prohibition of arbitrary killings, the protection of civilians’ properties, and the restriction against commandeering civilian vehicles. These directives also included a ban on road blockages and the forced recruitment of new soldiers, particularly children.
The directives stressed that any violations of these rules would result in military disciplinary action. Additionally, the directives called for the opening of safe passages and the provision of assistance to displaced persons fleeing conflict zones.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions and the complexities faced by civilians traveling through conflict areas in northern Shan State.
