Junta Replaces Central Command Chief Major General Kyi Khaing with Major General Aung Khaing Win

July 1, 2024

The junta has replaced the Central Command Chief, Major General Kyi Khaing, with Major General Aung Khaing Win, following an investigation into the killing of Venerable Abbot Bhaddanta Muninda Bhivamsa of Win Nimmita Monastery. According to military sources, Major General Kyi Khaing has been relieved of his duties and replaced due to the ongoing investigation related to the incident.

After the junta falsely claimed that PDF forces were responsible for the abbot’s death, the accompanying monk, Venerable Abbot Kan Thone Sint, revealed the true events to the monastic community. This revelation led to an internal investigation in late June, resulting in Major General Kyi Khaing and other military officers being questioned and subsequently removed from their posts.

Major General Aung Khaing Win, who previously served as the commander of the Triangle Regional Command based in Kyaingtong, has now been appointed as the new Central Command Chief.

Currently, intense clashes are ongoing between the junta forces and the Pa Laung (Ta’ang) National Liberation Army (TNLA) along with the People’s Defense Forces (PDF) in the regions of Mogok and Mattaya.
