Increased Security in Lashio Amid Tensions with Northern Alliance, Roads Blocked

June 15, 2024

In Lashio, Northern Shan State, security measures have tightened and roads have been blocked following reports of potential clashes between the Northern Alliance and the military junta. The situation has created heightened tension in the region.

Starting from around 4 PM on June 12, all main entry roads to Lashio were blocked by the military junta. The road from Hsenwi has been dug up and blocked using a bulldozer, and the Namtu road has also been cut off. The Innoi road is impassable, and the Hopaing and Nampan roads have been similarly blocked, effectively sealing off Lashio.

There are reports that Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) troops have reached the outskirts of Lashio, prompting the junta to tighten security both inside and around the city. The military has increased patrols, implemented strict security measures, and imposed a curfew from 6 AM to 6 PM, with checks on travelers’ phones.

Lashio, the headquarters of the Eastern Northern Command, is under significant military control. The junta has armed members of local militias and is preparing for possible drone attacks. Additionally, all vehicles and motorcycles in the city are being registered by local authorities. Unregistered vehicles are prohibited from traveling, according to residents.

Registered vehicles receive a smart card similar to a market pass, allowing movement within the city. Since the coup, Lashio has experienced at least five incidents involving car and motorcycle bombings, prompting the junta to tighten control over unregistered vehicles.
