Death Toll from Airstrike on Maung Kone Village in Htigyaing Township Rises to 9

September 3, 2024

The death toll from an airstrike by the military on Maung Kone Village in Htigyaing Township, Sagaing Region, has risen to nine, according to local sources. The incident occurred on September 1 at around 2:30 PM when two bombs were dropped by the Myanmar military’s air force from Meiktila Air Base. The bombs targeted a small shop and a sugar mill gate near the village market.

The bomb that fell near the shop exploded on a vehicle carrying fuel, causing a devastating explosion that killed nine people and injured ten others. Among the injured, several are reported to be in critical condition.

The military’s airstrike appears to have intentionally targeted civilians at a busy market, according to the Htigyaing Resistance Forces (TR). This attack follows a similar incident in April when the military bombed the Kan Ni Village market in Sagaing Region, although casualties were avoided due to villagers seeking shelter in bunkers.

On February 29, the military also targeted a market in Sittwe, Rakhine State, using naval artillery, resulting in 12 civilian deaths and over 80 injuries.
