Cherry Htet, a deputy police officer who served as a close personal security guard for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, was released from Yamethin Prison today after completing her sentence, according to a report from the Irrawaddy.
Deputy Police Officer Cherry Htet was arrested on September 23, shortly after the military coup, and was sentenced by the special court in Naypyidaw to a total of five years in prison: three years under police disciplinary charges and two years under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code.
Her case was initiated by Deputy Police Major Zaw Win Tun from the Anti-Terrorism Department, who filed charges under Section 505(b) at Zabuthiri Township Police Station, while a separate investigation and trial were conducted under police disciplinary regulations.
Cherry Htet was among the security personnel who served closely with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. The military junta had also previously arrested and imprisoned other members of her security detail, including Police Captain Pyae Phyo Naing and Cherry Htet.
This release marks the end of her imprisonment, allowing her to reunite with her family and loved ones.
