The British Embassy in Yangon has issued a statement expressing profound concern over the increasing brutality and rising civilian casualties across Myanmar. The embassy is deeply saddened by the reports of escalating violence and human rights abuses.

In their statement, the embassy conveyed condolences to the families of those affected by the inhumane killings in Sittwe, Rakhine State. They emphasized the need to protect civilians and hold perpetrators accountable for their actions.

The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) reported that from May 1 to May 30, 2024, over 100 civilians were killed nationwide due to junta attacks using heavy artillery and airstrikes. These attacks resulted in the deaths of 30 men and 22 women, totaling 52 fatalities. The Magway Region suffered the highest toll with 22 deaths.

Additionally, artillery fire caused the deaths of 23 men and 29 women, amounting to 52 civilian casualties, with Rakhine State experiencing the highest number at 13.

The AAPP confirmed these figures, including the names of the deceased. According to a report by the independent research group Insight Myanmar, airstrikes by the junta have increased significantly in 2024, leading to a higher number of fatalities compared to the previous three years since the coup.

The British Embassy’s statement reiterated their commitment to supporting the people of Myanmar and their call for an end to the violence and accountability for those responsible for the atrocities.
