The Arakan Army (AA) has issued a warning to civilians in Thandwe and Maungdaw towns in Rakhine State, advising them to be cautious of landmines planted by the junta as part of their defense preparations. According to the AA’s announcement, the junta has placed landmines in key entry points, bridges, and areas around their camps to fortify their positions.
The AA has reported that the junta’s troops have planted these mines in and around their surrendered bases, strategic headquarters, and surrounding areas including paths, schools, and fields, resulting in daily civilian casualties and injuries.
On July 12, it was found that the junta had mined the Nandaung Bridge (Nanchaung Bridge) in Thandwe, intending to destroy it. Landmines have also been discovered on the roads they used for retreat and near their temporary camps.
The AA has urged civilians to increase their awareness of landmine risks and avoid areas around military bases, abandoned camps, and strategic points. They have also advised against searching for food or sending livestock to graze in these areas due to the high risk of landmine accidents.
To ensure safety, the AA recommends that civilians acquire knowledge and awareness about landmines and refrain from venturing near junta-occupied or previously occupied areas.
