Chinese authorities have imposed a blockade on trade routes through Wa-controlled border gates in areas not involved in “Operation 1027,” restricting the transportation of essential goods, including food supplies and fuel. Local sources confirm that gates managed by the United Wa State Army (UWSA) and the NDAA in Hopang, Panglong, Namtit, Panghsang, and Mong La have been closed to trade by China as of October 27.
This sudden restriction has led to panic buying among residents of the Wa region, with people stocking up on essentials like eggs, noodles, cooking oil, and fuel. On October 23, UWSA issued a directive prohibiting traders from increasing prices due to the closure of the border gates and warned of strict measures against those who exploit the situation.
The blockage follows a meeting in late August between UWSA leader Bao Youxiang and Chinese envoy Mr. Ding Shi Chuan. During the meeting, China pressured UWSA to restrict access to the Kokang-controlled regions, preventing trade with MNDAA-held territories in Laukkai, Kunlong, Hsenwi, and Lashio. According to local residents, China’s main intent behind the blockade is to cut off supplies to Kokang areas controlled by MNDAA.
“China’s focus is on blocking trade to Kokang. Although formal routes are blocked, smuggling routes remain open, but prices are rising,” a resident of the Kokang-administered area told New Day Myanmar. “Chinese traders may profit from increased smuggling, with prices on goods fluctuating based on limited supply.”
The Wa authorities have taken measures to ensure that local residents have sufficient access to food and basic necessities. They have announced plans to monitor sales and prevent hoarding and price hikes. Additionally, Wa authorities warn that those engaging in unauthorized storage or price manipulation will face penalties.
Since October 20, China has blocked trade at gates in the Kachin State region, further restricting the flow of goods across the border. The Namtit border trade gate in the Wa region was initially closed in late August, followed by closures across all remaining Myanmar-China border gates.
