NUCC Appeals to Thailand for Humanitarian Assistance for Myanmar Nationals

September 24, 2024

The National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) issued a statement on September 23, appealing to the Thai government to show compassion and extend humanitarian assistance to the Myanmar nationals who fled to Thailand following the military coup in 2021.

The NUCC expressed its deep gratitude for the support provided by neighboring countries and the international community, acknowledging the hardships faced by Myanmar citizens who have been forced to flee their country. It emphasized that many displaced Myanmar nationals in Thailand continue to face challenges such as securing legal residency, finding employment, and accessing education and healthcare.

The NUCC urged Thailand to take a compassionate stance and implement temporary residency programs for Myanmar nationals without legal documentation, allowing them to stay legally in the country while the situation in Myanmar remains dire.

Nearly four years after the military coup, millions of Myanmar citizens have fled to Thailand. Some nationalist groups in Thailand have raised concerns over the growing number of refugees. In response, the NUCC called for understanding from Thailand and other neighboring countries, asking for continued support and compassion for those fleeing from military persecution.

The NUCC also appealed to Myanmar citizens living abroad to respect the laws, regulations, and cultural customs of their host countries and to live in harmony with the local population.

The NUCC reaffirmed its commitment to building a future federal democratic Myanmar and expressed its intention to remember the international community’s support during these difficult times. It pledged to collaborate on regional issues, including human rights, democracy, peace, and socio-economic development, in the future.
