NUG Minister for Human Rights Meets with Top US State Department Officials to Discuss Myanmar’s Situation

On June 22, NUG Minister for Human Rights U Aung Myo Min, along with Deputy Minister U Moe Zaw Oo, met with Mr. Robert S. Gilchrist, the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor at the US State Department. The meeting focused on the current human rights violations in Myanmar and the increasing aerial attacks targeting civilians, especially in Rakhine State.

During the meeting, Minister U Aung Myo Min highlighted the severe human rights abuses perpetrated by the junta, including the deliberate targeting of civilians in their violent campaigns. He urged the US government to take stronger actions against the military regime and to provide direct support to the people of Myanmar.

Minister U Aung Myo Min called for more stringent economic sanctions, arms embargoes, and international criminal proceedings against the junta leaders. He emphasized the need for urgent assistance for those fleeing persecution and conscription, particularly young people seeking refuge from forced military service.

The US State Department officials reaffirmed their commitment to standing with the people of Myanmar and indicated that the US would intensify its measures and increase support to address the ongoing crisis. The meeting concluded with a promise from the US officials to enhance their efforts in assisting Myanmar’s people and holding the junta accountable for its actions.

This announcement was shared on Minister U Aung Myo Min’s social media, where he expressed appreciation for the US’s continued support and reiterated the need for international solidarity in the face of escalating violence and oppression in Myanmar.
