The Special Advisory Council for Myanmar (SAC-M) has expressed deep concern over the ongoing armed conflict in Maungdaw Township, northern Rakhine State, highlighting the potential impacts on the local civilian population. This announcement comes in the wake of intensified military operations in the region.

On June 16, the Arakan Army (AA) declared its intent to launch offensive operations against remaining military bases in Maungdaw Township. Following this announcement, SAC-M released a statement on June 18, urging immediate action to protect civilians.

SAC-M has advised all residents of Maungdaw to evacuate immediately, citing the increasing risk of violence and its severe consequences on the local Rohingya population. The Council expressed particular concern about the heightened vulnerability of Rohingya communities amidst the escalating conflict.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights also voiced alarm over the deteriorating situation in Maungdaw, emphasizing the urgent need for measures to safeguard civilians.

In its statement, SAC-M called on the international community to take swift action to address the crisis in Myanmar. It urged the International Criminal Court (ICC) or a special tribunal to expedite the prosecution of those responsible for the ongoing violence and human rights abuses.

SAC-M’s appeal underscores the critical need for international intervention to mitigate the humanitarian impact of the conflict and hold perpetrators accountable. The situation in Maungdaw remains tense, with ongoing military activities posing significant threats to the safety and well-being of the local population.
